Language is the most important and the best communicating medium in human society. There are thousands of ethnic groups in the world who speak in different tongues. Bru community is one of them having an identity of an ethnicity. The language, the Bru community speak is called “Kau-Bru” in their native language, but to be known to other is “Bru Language.” Here, “Kau” means-language, and “Bru” means the name of the tribe. So, “Kau-Bru” means-the language of the Bru ethnic group. In fact, the language Bru people speak is a dialect of the greater family inclusive of all Tripuri speaking groups o f Tripura State and Boro-Dimasa-Kachari of Assam as opined by some great scholars.
According to Barkataki (1969) as quoted byDr. J. Gan. Chaudhury, in his book “The Reangs of Tripura”, there it is said that “....…........of the Tibeto-Burma sub-family, there are three groups, viz, Naga, Kuki Chin, Bodo…........The Bodo became the prominent language. It includes all the surviving non-Aryan languages of the plains, the Garo Hills and the North Cachar Hills. Kachari, Mech, Garo, Dimasa, Tipra….are derivations of Bodo.” *I am also convinced by this opinion. Even though Bru language is of a smaller family, and counted as a dialect, it is worth considering to retain an ethnicity and develope the language of the ethnic group, it requires uplifting the psychological status of the community through the native literature. Because, native literature is the best medium in acquiring knowledge, being easily learned and understood without the knowledge of grammar and vocabularies, as for all the native people are concerned, because they can speak and understand unwarily.
